Years ago, Oregon used to issue water advisories to residents restricting water usage when drought conditions prevailed during the summer months.

The city’s water plant had a capacity of just eight million gallons per day, so it wasn’t unusual for the city to try to limit water usage at the time, recalls Public Service Director Paul Roman.

The Benton-Carroll-Salem school board has scheduled a special meeting for Aug. 9 to decide on whether to place another request for millage on the ballot in November.

Voters last week turned down a 3.9-mill, 5-year operating levy that would have generated an additional $1.32 million annually for the Ottawa County school system.

Assistant county administrator named

The Wood County commissioners have appointed Joseph Fawcett of Bowling Green as the new assistant county administrator. Fawcett’s duties will include managing the county budget preparation process and monitoring appropriations, overseeing and supervising fiscal and clerical staff.

Oregon City Schools announced an agreement has been reached with the Oregon City Federation of Teachers, saving the district over $3 million during the course of the next three years.

“It’s been a culmination of a long process,” Superintendent Dr. Michael Zalar said. “We got started late in the spring and it’s carried over into the summer. We’ve kept the board informed along the way regarding the terms and the conditions and some of the language that has been negotiated.

Northwood Mayor Mark Stoner, who is completing three terms as mayor, is running for re-election this fall. Stoner, 55, of Ross Street, was appointed to council in 1993, then was re-elected to another term before he ran for mayor.

Stoner said he’s running again because he believes he’s made “a positive difference” in the city while overseeing deep budget cuts as a result of the economic recession.
