There was a time when “lucky” would not have been the best word to describe Martin “Mike” Halka.

He never got a chance to know his mother, who died when he was 6 weeks old. The death of his father, Martin James Halka, in 1992 came as a hard blow.

When it was announced Waite High School would receive $17.2 million for renovation by the Ohio Schools Facilities Commission, alumni were concerned because Scott was getting closer to $37 million.

Waite’s number ended up being closer to $20 million, but even Principal David Yenrick, an alumnus, made it clear that he was not pleased that Waite was getting $17 million less for renovation than its architectural twin, Scott.

The City of Oregon has begun construction on the Seaman Road Storm Sewer Improvement Project, which will include the installation of a storm sewer along the north side of Seaman Road to Clay High School.

A proposal to establish a regional emergency dispatching center in northern Wood County has received a financial boost from the state.

Mark Hummer, Lake Township Police Chief, reported last week to the township trustees that a grant of $87,840 was awarded for a feasibility study of merging dispatching services for the cities of Rossford and Northwood, the Village of Walbridge, and the township.
