In East Toledo at Work: A History of Business and Industry of East Toledo by Larry R. Michaels and Ronald J. Mauter, a chapter titled “Sixteen Tons and What Do You Get?” describes the old Ironwood neighborhood of East Toledo.

“The Ironville community further north on Front Street…grew up as early as the 1860s around heavy industry that was dependent on shipping on the river. The iron ore and coke plants gave the community its name, and other industries, such as shipbuilding and oil refining, arrived soon after,” states the book, copyrighted in 2006 and published by Bihl House Publishing Company.

Ohio State University President E. Gordon Gee was fortunate enough to be forgiven for one of his “sins” recently by a very well-respected religious organization: the Sacred Heart Home of the Little Sisters of the Poor.

Riders Unlimited, Inc. has completed the purchase of a horse facility on Behlman Road near Oak Harbor and is now looking for volunteers to help with repairs.

The non-profit organization based in Fremont purchased the property that had been owned by  Robin Vess, who was convicted of animal cruelty in 2010 after officers from the Humane Society of Ottawa County responded to a call about the poor condition of more than 40 horses on the farm.

Oregon council on Monday will consider amending a sanitary sewer accommodation tap agreement for Cedar Point Development, LLC.

Public Service Director Paul Roman said at a committee of the whole meeting last Monday that the proposed ordinance would amend an existing sanitary sewer accommodation tap that was provided to Cedar Point Development LLC, 1040 N. Wynn Road, in 2005.

A resolution expressing opposition to the proposed lease of the Ohio Turnpike will be on the agenda of Oregon City Council on Monday.

Gov. John Kasich has proposed leasing the 241-mile turnpike to private interests to turn a profit.

“Oregon believes that leasing the currently well-maintained turnpike will result in a lesser maintained roadway and higher tolls unrelated to the actual cost of its safe operation,” states the resolution.
