Oregon will hold a free outdoor movie at its soccer fields off Starr Avenue Extension on Friday, Aug. 5 starting at dusk or about 9:15 p.m.

The movie, McFarland USA, is considered a family friendly movie. The two hour family drama is an “inspiring Disney sports drama based on actual events,” according to the website

“Kevin Costner plays a high school football coach who ends up leading a cross-country track team made up of lower class Latino students to a state championship,” according to a synopsis from the website.

We've all seen him at Ohio State football and basketball games. That congenial face painted with scarlet and gray that features the Block O on the right side and a leaf on the left.

We know him as 'Big Nut.'

But some may not know that 54-year-old Jon Peters traces his roots back to Ottawa County, specifically Graytown, where he grew up for part of his childhood while attending school in Oak Harbor. The former Rocket lived in Green Springs before moving to Graytown, graduating from high school in 1979 and Ohio State University soon after.

The Civilian Marksmanship on July 2 hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the installation of its new electronic rifle and pistol targets on Petrarca Range at Camp Perry.

The equipment is marketed by CMP Targets, with technology provided by Kongsberg Target Systems (KTS). The ceremony commemorated the CMP’s 20th anniversary and the on-going partnership between the CMP and the Ohio National Guard.

Petrarca Range will be open throughout the National Matches (happening now through August 9) to allow competitors and visitors to take their own shots on the KTS targets for free. During this time, guests are encouraged to bring their own rifle, pistol and ammo to use at the range as no rentals will be available other than the day of the Ribbon Cutting.

Oregon City Council last week amended its municipal code to prohibit smoking in the Oregon Recreational Facility, also known as The William P. Coontz Athletic Complex.

“It is in the best interests of public health and smoking that tobacco products be prohibited …on property owned or under the control of the city,” states the ordinance. “There is now a uniform statewide minimum standard to protect people from the hazards associated with exposure to second hand smoke from tobacco,” states the ordinance. “Therefore, it is the intent of this ordinance to make air safer to breathe in the Oregon Recreational Facility.”
